Sir John Shore (1793–1798)

Sir John Shore (later Lord Teignmouth) served as Governor-General of Bengal from 1793 to 1798. His tenure is generally remembered as comparatively peaceful, with an emphasis on maintaining stability and following a policy of non-intervention in Indian states’ internal disputes.

Battle of Kharda (1795)

  • The Battle of Kharda was fought in March 1795 between the Nizam of Hyderabad (Asaf Jah II) and the Maratha Confederacy.
  • Outcome: The Marathas won a decisive victory. The Nizam was compelled to pay a heavy indemnity and cede territory (often mentioned in sources as including areas like Daulatabad, Aurangabad, and Sholapur), reflecting a major setback to Hyderabad’s power.
