Executive Summary: What the Final Notification Changes

The final TRE 4.0 advertisement is structurally different from TRE-3. The biggest changes are a two-stage examination, negative marking, an A-E response rule, and a vacancy distribution dominated by Higher Secondary posts.

Misinformation alertOlder pre-notification pages saying one written exam, no negative marking, 46,595 vacancies or an exam from 22-27 September are not aligned with the final 18 August advertisement. Use the final BPSC PDF and later corrigenda/admit-card notice as the controlling source.

Why the old September calendar should not be usedThe older BPSC exam calendar still displays 46,595 tentative vacancies with 22-27 September 2026 dates. That schedule predates the 18 August final advertisement and conflicts with the new application window ending 30 September. Treat a fresh BPSC schedule as necessary.

TET qualifying-score rule stated in the advertisementFor CTET/BTET, the notice refers to minimum qualifying marks of 60% for General category, 55% for BC/EBC and General-category women, and 50% for SC/ST/PwD categories. Candidates from outside Bihar are treated under the General-category standard for this purpose. STET qualifying marks follow the Bihar School Examination Board rule.
05

Age Limit: Two Different Cut-off Dates Matter

Do not miss this technical detailThe notification says the minimum age is calculated on 01.08.2026, while the maximum age is calculated with reference to 01.08.2024.
Category / LevelAge rule
Classes 1-5 and 6-8Minimum 18 years on 01.08.2026

Candidates claiming a relaxation should use the exact clause and supporting certificate rather than relying on a generic age calculator.

06

Selection Stages: TRE-4 Is Now a Two-Exam Recruitment

Stage 1Preliminary Exam

150-mark General Studies screening paper with 1/3 negative marking.

Stage 2Main Exam

Level-specific objective paper. Language qualifying; GS/subject marks drive merit.

Stage 3Document Scrutiny

Qualification, TET/STET, reservation, domicile and claim verification.

Stage 4Merit & Recommendation

Subject/category merit plus district preference. No interview.

No interview

The advertisement expressly states that no interview will be conducted. Selection is examination-and-merit based, subject to eligibility/document verification.

Separate mains action is required

Only preliminary-qualified candidates can proceed to the mains, and the notice requires the prescribed mains-stage application/action. A prelim pass does not automatically place a candidate into the main exam without completing the required process.

District preferenceCandidates can give preferences for up to 38 districts. BPSC warns that if a candidate lists only some districts and does not get a vacancy there, unlisted districts are not automatically treated as preferences. Fill district choices strategically.

The Commission states that candidates for the main examination may be shortlisted in a range of roughly 2 to 10 times the reserved vacancies on the basis of preliminary marks/category cut-off, with tie-at-cut-off handling as prescribed.

08

Main Exam Pattern by Teaching Level

Duration inconsistency inside the advertisementThe level-wise tables on the main-exam pages show 2 hours 30 minutes, while a later general bullet states 2 hours. Because the official advertisement itself is internally inconsistent on this point, candidates should treat the final BPSC exam schedule/admit card/corrigendum as controlling.

Language is qualifying

Part I combines English with Hindi/Urdu/Bangla practical language knowledge. A minimum 30% in the language part is compulsory.

Negative marking continues

The main examination also carries 1/3 negative marking for wrong answers and uses the five-option A-E response format.

No re-evaluation

The notification states that answer-sheet re-evaluation is not permitted. Follow BPSC objection/answer-key windows carefully when announced.

Detailed Syllabus: What to Prepare

Preliminary General Studies syllabus

Static + Bihar

  • General Knowledge
  • History of India and Bihar
  • General Geography
  • Geography of Bihar and major river systems
  • Indian Polity
  • Indian Economy
  • Changes in Bihar's economy after Independence

Current + Analytical

  • Current events of national importance
  • Current events of international importance
  • Indian National Movement
  • Bihar's role in the National Movement
  • General Mental Ability
Main exam: Classes 1-5

Language (30): English plus Hindi/Urdu/Bangla practical knowledge; minimum 30% qualifying.

General Studies (120): Elementary Mathematics, Mental Ability, General Awareness, General Science, Social Science, Indian National Movement, Geography and Environment. Curriculum basis is tied to school-level SCERT/NCERT content with difficulty aligned to the minimum qualification standard stated by BPSC.

Main exam: Classes 6-8

Language (30): qualifying. General Studies (40): Elementary Mathematics, General Awareness, General Science, Indian National Movement and Geography. Concerned Subject (80): choose the eligible advertised subject: Mathematics & Science, Social Science, Hindi, Urdu, Sanskrit or English.

For Social Science, the notification separates History and a choice among Geography/Economics/Political Science subject to graduation-subject conditions.

Main exam: Classes 9-10

Language 30 + GS 40 + Subject 80. GS covers Elementary Mathematics, General Awareness, General Science, Indian National Movement and Geography. The concerned-subject component follows the subject selected and the notified qualification/curriculum rule.

The generic syllabus list contains more subjects than the current vacancy table. Apply only against subjects actually advertised and for which you satisfy the exact degree/STET condition.

Main exam: Classes 11-12

Language 30 + GS 40 + Subject 80. The GS portion is framed at the higher-secondary level and includes Elementary Mathematics, General Awareness, General Science, Indian National Movement and Geography. The 80-mark concerned-subject section is the decisive component for most candidates.

High-vacancy focus: Chemistry (3,695), Physics (1,758), English (1,321), Botany (1,078) and Psychology (1,030) together account for a major share of Higher Secondary openings.

10

Final Merit, Tie-break & Recommendation Logic

Classes 1-5

Merit marks: Part II General Studies only.

Language: qualifying at 30%; used in tie handling as stated by the notification.

Further tie: alphabetical-order rule is applied if the defined marks remain equal.

Classes 6-8, 9-10 & 11-12

Merit marks: Part II General Studies + Part III Concerned Subject.

First tie-break: higher Part III subject marks.

Next tie-break: Part I language marks, followed by the stated alphabetical-order rule if still tied.

Strategic implicationFor 6-12 candidates, the 80-mark subject paper is both a large share of merit and the first tie-break lever. Subject preparation should therefore dominate the mains-stage plan after language safety and GS consistency are secured.

No. TRE-4 introduces a Preliminary Examination followed by a Main Examination. Preliminary qualification is required before proceeding to the mains under the prescribed BPSC process.

What are the selection stages in TRE-4?

The recruitment flow is Preliminary Exam -> Main Exam -> Document Scrutiny -> Merit and Recommendation. There is no interview.

Yes. The advertisement specifies 1/3 mark deduction for wrong answers in both prelims and mains. The five-option A-E response system also applies.

What is the A-B-C-D-E rule?

Each objective question has five options. If you do not want to attempt a question, you must mark Option E. Leaving all options blank is treated under the notification's penalty rule and attracts the stated 1/3-mark deduction.

How many questions and marks are there in the preliminary exam?

The preliminary General Studies paper carries 150 questions for 150 marks, with one mark per question and negative marking as notified.

What is the preliminary exam duration?

The preliminary exam table provides a duration of 2 hours.

What are the minimum qualifying percentages in prelims?

The paper has Language 30 marks + General Studies 120 marks = 150 marks. The language part is qualifying, while the General Studies part forms the merit base for this level.

What is the mains pattern for Classes 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12?

For these levels, the main paper is Language 30 + General Studies 40 + Concerned Subject 80 = 150 marks. Merit is based on Part II and Part III, subject to the notified qualifying conditions.

Is the language section qualifying?

Yes. Part I combines English with Hindi/Urdu/Bangla practical language knowledge, and the notification requires at least 30% in the language part.

What is the final mains exam duration?

The advertisement contains an internal inconsistency: level-wise main-exam tables show 2 hours 30 minutes, while a later general instruction says 2 hours. Candidates should follow the final BPSC exam schedule, admit card or corrigendum for the controlling duration.

Can candidates request re-evaluation of the answer sheet?

No. The notification states that re-evaluation is not permitted. Candidates should therefore pay close attention to any answer-key objection window announced by BPSC.

The preliminary General Studies syllabus includes General Knowledge, History of India and Bihar, Geography and Bihar geography/river systems, Indian Polity, Indian Economy, current events, Indian National Movement, Bihar's role in the movement and General Mental Ability.

What is most important in mains for Classes 6-12?

The 80-mark concerned-subject section is especially important because it is a major part of merit and also becomes the first tie-break factor for Classes 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12.

How is final merit calculated for Classes 1-5?

For Classes 1-5, merit is based on Part II General Studies marks. The language section is qualifying and is used in tie handling as prescribed in the notification.

For Classes 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12, merit is based on Part II General Studies + Part III Concerned Subject.

What is the tie-break rule for Classes 6-12?

The first tie-break is higher marks in Part III, the concerned subject. The next tie-break uses Part I language marks, followed by the stated alphabetical-order rule if the tie still remains.

If you satisfy the notified eligibility for more than one class level, you may apply accordingly. The notification charges the application fee separately for each class level selected.

What is the TRE-4 application fee?

Yes. Candidates must complete One-Time Registration (OTR) on the BPSC online portal and should use the same OTR profile rather than creating multiple registrations.

How many district preferences can a candidate give?

The notification allows preferences for up to 38 districts. If you list only selected districts and do not obtain a vacancy there, unlisted districts are not automatically treated as your preferences.

Is there an interview in TRE-4?

What documents should be kept ready before applying?

Keep date-of-birth proof, relevant academic marksheets/certificates, teacher-training qualification, CTET/BTET/STET proof, subject qualification documents and all reservation/domicile/PwD/EWS/service certificates applicable to your claim ready before final submission.

Do Bihar reservation benefits require the prescribed state documents?

Yes. Reservation benefits under Bihar state recruitment rules depend on the prescribed Bihar-resident/category documentation. Candidates should not assume that an out-of-state category certificate automatically receives the same reservation treatment.

What is the biggest exam-pattern change from TRE-3 to TRE-4?

TRE-4 moves from the earlier one-stage style to a Prelims + Mains structure and introduces 1/3 negative marking with the A-E response rule. This makes accuracy and disciplined question selection much more important.

What is the TRE-4 exam date?

The final 18 August advertisement does not provide a workable final exam date in the application timeline. Older 22-27 September dates belong to an earlier calendar carrying 46,595 tentative vacancies and conflict with applications continuing through 30 September. Candidates should wait for the revised BPSC schedule.

Where should I check the latest official TRE-4 update?

Use the original BPSC TRE-4 detailed notification, the BPSC official website and the BPSC online application portal. Any later corrigendum, revised schedule or subject requisition issued by BPSC should be treated as controlling.
