Geography • UNGA • Cartography

UNGA Correct the Map Resolution & Equal-Area World Maps

The UN debate focuses on how common world-map projections distort the relative size of continents, particularly Africa, and encourages wider use of equal-area approaches.

A/80/L.104UNGA resolution
164-1-6vote: for-against-abstain
1569Mercator projection
2018Equal Earth projection

What the resolution seeks

  • The UNGA adopted Correct the Map on 4 September 2026, introduced by Togo on behalf of the African Group.
  • India voted in favour; the United States was the only vote against; six countries abstained.
  • The resolution promotes more accurate representation of the relative area of continents and wider consideration of equal-area projections.
  • It does not redraw international borders and does not mandate one compulsory world-map projection.

Mercator vs Equal Earth

  • Mercator: developed by Gerardus Mercator in 1569; conformal and historically valuable for navigation, but greatly enlarges high-latitude regions.
  • Equal Earth: equal-area pseudocylindrical projection introduced in 2018 by Bojan Savric, Tom Patterson and Bernhard Jenny.
  • Africa is roughly 14 times larger than Greenland, although Mercator-style maps can make them look comparable.
  • Equal-area does not mean distortion-free: shape, distance, angle or direction must still be compromised.
Question 3: With reference to the recent UN General Assembly resolution on world map projections, consider the following statements:

TCS HyperVault Plans a Major AI Data Centre Campus in Hyderabad

TCS subsidiary HyperVault has announced a phased AI-ready data-centre campus in Hyderabad with up to Rs 70,000 crore investment and up to 1 GW planned capacity.

₹70,000 crinvestment up to full build-out
264 acresland secured
1 GWplanned power capacity
2 Jun 2028target mentioned by Telangana CM

Project & AI infrastructure

  • Developer: HyperVault AI Data Center Ltd., a subsidiary of TCS.
  • Location: Hyderabad, Telangana; development is planned in phases.
  • The campus is designed for AI training, inference and high-performance computing with high-density GPU deployments.
  • 1 GW = 1,000 MW refers principally to the huge electrical power capacity needed by the computing campus, not storage capacity or internet speed.

Cooling, sustainability & strategic value

  • High-density AI servers generate extreme heat; HyperVault plans liquid-cooled infrastructure.
  • The project mentions green energy and water-neutral design principles. Water-neutral does not necessarily mean zero water use.
  • Domestic AI infrastructure can support compute capacity, lower latency, data residency, startups and global AI investment.
  • Core chain: chips + compute + power + data + talent.
Question 4: With reference to the proposed TCS HyperVault AI Data Centre in Hyderabad, consider the following statements:

China's Yarlung Tsangpo Mega Dam & India's Concerns

China is proceeding with a massive hydropower development on the lower Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet, raising questions in India about trans-boundary water governance, Himalayan risks and downstream information sharing.

5cascade hydropower stations
1.2 tn yuanestimated investment
~60 GWcapacity often cited
2006India-China Expert-Level Mechanism

River geography & project

  • Tibet: Yarlung Tsangpo / Yarlung Zangbo.
  • Arunachal Pradesh: Siang/Dihang; after Dibang and Lohit join, it becomes the Brahmaputra.
  • Bangladesh: Jamuna before joining the Ganga-Padma system.
  • China began construction in July 2025 on the lower reaches near Nyingchi / the Great Bend. The officially confirmed outline is five cascade hydropower stations and about 1.2 trillion yuan investment.
  • The Great Bend offers enormous hydropower potential because of the sharp loss in elevation.

Why India is concerned

  • India is a lower-riparian country and seeks transparency on flow regulation, diversion and reservoir operation.
  • Key concerns: lean-season flow, sudden releases/flood risk, sediment, ecology, dam safety and seismic/landslide vulnerability.
  • The Expert-Level Mechanism (ELM), established in 2006, covers hydrological data sharing, flood information and trans-border river issues.
  • A run-of-the-river label does not automatically mean zero storage, diversion, tunnels or downstream ecological impact.

Jaynagar-Nepal Border Immigration Port: New Cross-Border Railway Facility

A railway-based immigration/checking facility is proposed near Jaynagar in Madhubani district to strengthen passenger-document verification and security on the India-Nepal cross-border rail route.

Route & railway facts

  • India: Jaynagar, Madhubani district, Bihar.
  • Nepal: Inarwa, Dhanusha district, Madhesh Province; Inarwa is the first Nepalese railway station after the border.
  • The 34.9-km Jaynagar-Kurtha passenger service began on 2 April 2022.
  • The broader Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas corridor is about 68.7 km.
  • Janakpurdham, an important religious-cultural centre associated with Sita/Janaki, lies on the corridor.

Why an immigration facility matters

  • The proposed facility will strengthen identity/document checks, baggage checking, surveillance and inter-agency coordination for cross-border rail passengers.
  • India and Nepal have an open-border relationship, but open border does not mean absence of identity and security checks.
  • Immigration primarily concerns people and entry/exit; Customs primarily concerns goods, baggage and trade.
  • RPF: central force under Ministry of Railways; GRP: part of State Police.
  • Bihar's major road-based India-Nepal Integrated Check Posts are Raxaul and Jogbani.
