Andhra Pradesh to Emerge as India’s Third Major Subsea Cable Gateway

Visakhapatnam is being developed as a new east-coast landing node for international submarine cables, complementing Mumbai and Chennai and supporting the rapid growth of data centres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

What is changing?

  • Emerging third gateway: Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The build-out is linked to rising data-centre activity in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
  • The new landing hub is intended to strengthen international internet connectivity, bandwidth and resilience.
  • An alternate east-coast route can reduce dependence on ageing routes and lower geopolitical disruption risk.

Two cable projects to remember

  • Microsoft — I2C: a submarine cable system of about 3,600 km, linking India with Southeast Asia, especially Singapore and Malaysia, and also connecting Chennai.
  • Expected service timeline: Q4 2029.
  • Google — America–India Connect: a wider global cable system with a planned landing point at Visakhapatnam.
  • Google’s build-out is linked with its data-centre complex in Andhra Pradesh and aims to support cloud, AI and internet connectivity.
